Why same-currency conversion works without reference rates
See why a same currency amount can calculate without reference data, while a cross-currency result needs a usable rate.
Why the two calculations differ
A same currency calculation needs no conversion factor: its factor is 1, so the entered amount remains the same. A cross-currency calculation needs a usable reference rate for each currency in the conversion. If those rates are missing, a custom rate supplied by the user can provide the required conversion input.
With an empty reference table, USD 123.45 to USD remains USD 123.45. USD to EUR needs a valid reference conversion or a user supplied rate.
Open full-size diagram ↗What the converter displays
The currency converter displays a converted reference amount and a rate type. With reference data, its rate type is Daily reference; with a user-entered rate, it is User supplied. When there are no reference rates, the interface says that same-currency calculations still work and other conversions need your own rate. The page identifies ECB data as its source and says the results are informational, not real-time or transaction rates.
A hypothetical missing-rate check
With no reference rates available, a hypothetical USD 123.45 to USD conversion remains USD 123.45 because the same-currency factor is 1. A hypothetical USD-to-EUR conversion cannot use an empty rate table; it needs valid reference data or a user-supplied custom rate. Neither case creates a transaction quote, estimates provider fees, or confirms a real transfer amount.
Reading the example
The hypothetical figures illustrate calculation logic, not a live quote. In the same currency case, the converter multiplies 123.45 by 1 and formats the displayed result as 123.45 USD. For the cross-currency case with an empty rate table, the conversion asks for the EUR rate and cannot produce a result. A custom rate is a user input; it does not establish what a provider would offer.
Reference rates and limits
The reference feed can be unavailable, and reference data may also be older than the page's stated freshness threshold. The converter labels unavailable data and gives a way to enter a custom rate when currencies differ. Check the date and the rate basis for your own purpose. This informational calculation does not include a transaction provider's fees or confirm an amount that would be received.
