CURRENCY PLANNING

Add multi-currency balances only after choosing a common base

Adding 500 USD and 500 EUR as 1,000 money units hides the currency distinction.

Why the raw sum has no useful unit

Adding 500 USD and 500 EUR as 1,000 money units hides the currency distinction. A reporting total needs a chosen base currency and a conversion basis. Preserve the original balances as well as the converted values so another reader can reconstruct the calculation and see which assumptions created the total.

Converted contributions are 500 USD, 440 USD and 375 USD, totaling 1,315 USD under the article’s hypothetical rates. Shares use a common USD basis, before conversion costs.

Reconcile an illustrative balance sheet

Take 500 USD, 400 EUR and 300 GBP. Assume 1.10 USD per EUR and 1.25 USD per GBP. In a USD presentation, the components are 500 USD, 440 USD and 375 USD, totaling 1,315 USD. The raw numeric sum of the source balances is 1,200, but it is not a valid USD valuation. The converted contributions can be compared because their units now match.

Worked example: USD balance: 500; EUR in USD: 440; GBP in USD: 375. Invented values; units follow the row labels and article.

Use one valuation convention consistently

If the EUR balance uses a month-end benchmark while the GBP balance uses a live provider quote, the total mixes conventions. That may be a deliberate estimate, but it needs a label. Choose a common timestamp and source where available, or document missing rates and the fallback used. Do not silently carry forward an old value and describe the entire total as current.

Distinguish a valuation from withdrawable cash

A reporting total is not a guarantee that liquidation or withdrawal will deliver that amount. Spreads, conversion charges and availability can differ. SanForex converts one amount at a time; it does not connect to accounts or aggregate balances automatically. Keep a worksheet with original currency, original amount, rate units, converted amount and observation date, then check that the converted rows sum to the reported total.

Sources and conventions

Examples are hypothetical. Worked examples state their formulas and assumptions in the article; our methodology explains the related calculators.
